Census Data Mapper Map & Analysis - October 2013

LINK to this map on Google Drive.

The topic of this map is percent Black or African American population in the United States in 2010.  The area of the United States where the percent of the population of African Americans is the highest is in the South.  This ranges from 34 to 85 % of the population in this region. Alabama and Mississippi have very high densities.

Maybe there is a high density in this area because they were hiding from the slave trade in early Civil War times.  Once established, they stayed there because there were jobs.  Also they may have told others that they knew that there was work and that further increased the population.  The Mississippi River may have created jobs for this population.  The areas that are low because it would be difficult to cross the river and move west once living in a southern area at Civil War times.  Even though there has been plenty of time to move since then, the area with dense population was so well established and the families were comfortable with their area of living.

In the South, there are cultural practices that are important to African Americans and less familiar in areas without the significant African American population i.e. this might affect the dialect, food and culture of the region.
